Teen Driving Contracts

May 12, 2014

Turning the car keys over to a teen driver can be one of the most difficult and scariest things a parent will face. Teen drivers are new to the roadways and often lack experience to properly deal with hazards on the roadway and avoid an accident. At Spinner Law Firm, Tampa Auto Accident Attorneys, we believe effective parent-teen communication is critical to helping teens recognize and choose safe driving behaviors. Having a conversation with your new teen driver provides an opportunity for you to share your own driving experiences, your concerns about safety and your ideas for ground rules. Some common topics to address include repercussions for speeding, the number of passengers allowed in the car and how late at night your teen is allowed to drive.

Thanks to the Florida Department of Highway safety, there is something that parents can do to assure that their teens are safer when operating a vehicle or traveling as a passenger. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has published a drivers’ guide for parents and teens. This useful guide contains important driving skills and exposes teens to a variety of driving experiences. Most importantly, it contains a contract that sets forth rules to help make sure our teen drivers make safe choices and understand the consequences for breaking the rules.
