Couple perish in traffic accident

May 03, 2012

A married couple were killed in a crash on Interstate 4 this morning when they were ejected from an SUV after being cut off, troopers said.  The crash, which happened at 6:10 a.m., closed westbound I-4 near Plant City for several hours during the busy morning commute.

The couple were traveling west in a 2004 GMC Envoy in the inside lane of I-4 when a car in the outside lane aggressively swerved into their lane and cut them off, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.

The SUV swerved into the inside emergency lane and then over corrected, cutting back across traffic, where it collided with a semitrailer, Gaskins said. The SUV was deflected off the semitrailer back toward the median wall where it overturned, ejecting the couple, who were not wearing seat belts, Gaskins said.

Both were taken to area hospitals, where they died. The driver of the semitrailer was not injured.  The driver of the car who cut off the victims did not stop. Authorities are searching for a dark colored compact car in connection with the crash.
